The son of a successful high school, Walsh was one of multiple Benedictine players who made their way to Columbia for their college careers. Named All-City and honorable mention All-State as a senior in 1979 the Savannah Quarterback Club named him the Class AAAA Lineman of the Year. Walsh played as a reserve defensive end as a true freshman before moving to the offensive line in 1981. He redshirted that season before becoming the starting left tackle in 1982. He moved inside to left guard in 1983 and was named by the coaching staff as the offensive player of the game against Georgia and Florida State that year. Walsh was also the starting left guard on the 10-2 1984 squad. He went into coaching after graduation and has been head coach at the Bradwell Instittute in Hinesville, Georgia for since 1995, winning 110 games in his first seventeen seasons (through end of 2010).
