1958 - What looked like would be a comfortable win over Clemson turned into a narrow victory requiring some sharpshooting at the end as Carolina defeated the Tigers 74-67. USC led 37-28 at the half but things turned when Gamecock point guard Cookie Pericola fouled out. There were thirteen minutes left in the game at that point and the Tigers began pressing USC on defense and relying on the shooting of George Krajack to chip away at the lead. Clemson would get within one at 68-67 in the closing minutes, but four free throws from Richie Hoffman and another two from Dick Prater helped the Gamecocks pull away in the end. The win helped USC improve to 2-5 in the ACC on the year, breaking a two game conference losing streak. Prater led the way with 29 points and Pericola had 17 before exiting the game.
