2004 - A crucial steal and breakaway basket by Carlos Powell made it seven wins in their last eight games as the Gamecocks defeated Auburn in overtime 53-51. Carolina scored first in the game and at one point had a five point lead in the first half (16-11) but the Tigers would pull ahead 28-22 by the end of the first half. Some cold shooting by USC enabled Auburn to pull ahead by as many as nine, leading 41-32 midway through the second half. Five straight points by Powell got Carolina within four, a basket by Tarence Kinsey cut the score to 41-39 and then Josh Gonner hit a three pointer to give the Gamecocks the lead at 42-41. The game went back and forth down the stretch, and a layup by Kinsey put Carolina up by two with 49 seconds left, but Gonner fouled Auburn's Nathan Watson, who sank two free throws to send the game into overtime. The Tigers would pull ahead in the extra period, leading by two with 35 seconds to go when Kinsey made a basket to tie the game. As Auburn was bringing the ball upcourt Powell stole the ball from Watson and took it in for the go-ahead score with 13 seconds left. The Tigers got one last shot, but USC's Kerbrell Brown blocked an attempt by Lewis Monroe as the Gamecocks improved to 15-2 on the year.
