1954 - One of the first times the South Carolina football program really grabbed national headlines was 1954 when they surprised a highly favored Army team in a 34-20 upset. It was just the third time in 65 years that Army had lost their season opener, but there was nothing flukish about it as Mike Caskey led a Gamecock rushing attack that piled up 446 rushing yards. USC found early success when junior end Joe Silas recovered a Cadet fumble at the Army 38 and Harold Lewis converted it into a score, throwing a 15-yard touchdown pass to Carl Brazell. The Cadets looked like they recovered from the blow, as they tied the game on a rushing touchdown, then an interception of a Lewis pass was returned 43 yards for a score and a 14-7 Army lead. Undeterred, USC tied the game before the half on a five yard touchdown run by Caskey and extra point from Jim Jarrett. The Gamecocks stunned Army in the second half, as Carl Brazell rushed for a touchdown to take the lead, then fellow halfback Tommy Woodlee added another for a 27-14 lead. Army scored in the fourth to cut it to 27-20, but Caskey's second touchdown of the day wrapped things up. Caskey led the way with 129 yards on 11 carries, while quarterbacks Mackie Prickett (62 yards) and Lewis (49) also helped drive the ground attack.
